nice price deal !!! airhead continues to impress and confound with his run of releases on r&s. his last release >wait/south congress< found itself gaining praise right across the board. it showcased his atmospheric guitar styles as well as his deft programming skills, resulting in some trying to pigeon-hole his sound in a post rock/electronica direction. this ep proves it not that easy to pin him down with two new tracks of fresh club music. pyramid lake again showcases his expert manipulation of samples, but this time weaves them into a drunken dance groove, full of whirring percussion and heavy bass. black ink is a bubbling, percussive roller that in the hands of a lesser producer would sound like a traincrash. it bounces along almost out of control and sucks you into its charms until it hits you with some uplifting, haunted chords, at which point it is impossible to resist.

nancy azzurro comes out of nowhere. well, that�s not entirely true�lovefingers met her about 10 years ago on the beach near her home on the island of sardinia�but in terms of our musical orbit, she is a very private artist, creating only the purest music, straight from the heart. these three gorgeous songs were produced during her young adulthood and would become secret weapons for a handful of djs she�d meet over the following years. still standing the test of time today, they�re now finally seeing a proper release. side-a�s grace invites us into nancy�s world where disco and house collide�the live drums, percussion and bassline hold down a blanket of synth strings and wah-wahs. halfway through this epic enters a piano hook of the highest order, an emotional rush that brings together everything we love on the dancefloor, guaranteed to induce goosebumps. on side-b, she rounds out the release with the dreamlike, percussive and yugo-tinged illustrations & the large, and closes with the title track teen bee, a loopy cowbell-driven dive into the deep, filled with luscious sweeping chords and meandering keys. the esp institute is honoured to close out 2016 (one seriously heavy year) with such a beautiful and cohesive release. thank you and goodnight.

one of the holy grail of the minimal synth and one of the most obscure musical projects ever produced in italy is finally reissued on mannequin records. originally released in 1981 by broadbean records, a sub-label of lm records, flo & andrew only release take suicide was home-recorded and home-mixed by the duo in bologna, using early drum machines like the boss dr-55 and the korg kr-55, analog synthesizers, guitar, saxophone, tape loops. flo & andrew music is truly unique and exemplifies the fact that limitation can be the perfect source for creativity. the title-track and to committ suicid� travel through contort and nervous synth sounds and loops, taking somehow inspiration from the no wave heroes, while japanese girls is nothing less than a beautiful minimal electronics track in the mythology of the futuristic rise of japanese country. recently (re)discovered, �take suicide� is a milestone of the european minimal synth singles and is not really a coincidence that a young generations of producers take it as inspiration (you can see take suicide floating in the tracklist of artists as helena hauff and ngly). another must have in your collection / record bag! mastering by ruud 66.

die orangen, aka aussie producers dreems & kris baha are teaming up for the first time with 2 new unreleased jams under their new alias. slow and atmospheric, yet punching and grooving die orangen managed to meltdown genres into 100bpm 11 minute long trippy trancey bonanza with a substantial amount of jungle psychedelia and heavy drum machines. one day in sheperton is a more drum oriented industrial power house tune. with the diggerido and distorted voices coming in towards its 2nd half. this ep includes, as expected from the malka tuti crew, with awesome remixes by italian maestros fabrizio mamarella (of slow motion records) and alessandro adriani (of mannequin records), oodandatta rain is an ep that throws the listener back to the early days of partying in anjuna beach, when trance was not yet a genre, but a state of mind, and where the tribal element could be found in all sorts of bizzarre contexts and remote corners.

in 2016, the festival in prora releases another vinyl, and this time it is a real tasty tidbit. the boys from kiel, mitja & daniel mes, who also played at this year�s festival, included their track �feel free� on the record. this track is the beach-echo and a perfect medicine against the winter blues. the second track originates straight from the island rügen, produced by the well-known irie island crew and holds the name �rügen rockt�. the name speaks for itself and through the well harmonized dub-swing reggae vibes be sure to be grooved from north to south of the small island. the backside of the vinyl is a piece of handcrafted art. the very distinct tag am meer logo is engraved through the help of a special technique called: etched. this record does not only sound good, but it also looks amazing.

having done such wonderful work alongside wolf muller on the sound of glades album, cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on emotional response. the german producer s ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on u but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. djs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of ann, where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album s most club-ready moments. theres a strong variety of tones and moods across youth sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of running to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of prismatic prolog, and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. �black light� sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.
